Summary

Bologna Municipal Authority’s Register for Active Participation (Registro Cittadinanza Attiva del Comune di Bologna) represents an excellent example of governance structures and new legal frameworks aimed at fostering circular economy initiatives. The municipal authority has approved several circular economy projects within the framework of Bologna’s Regulations for the Care and Regeneration of Urban Public Property that was adopted by the Municipal Authority in 2014. One example is the association REUSE WITH LOVE, which is registered on the list for active participation in Bologna, with its two projects REUSE WITH LOVE and REUSE FOR GOOD.

Summary

In the case of the Basque Country, boosting the circular economy means committing to “greening” manufacturing, products, consumption and end-of-life, through public-private collaboration. Basque country has a long culture of networking and public-private collaboration and an average to high position on the “regional innovation scoreboard”.

Community gardens in Utrecht

Summary

In Utrecht in the last few years a great diversity of community gardens has emerged. These include: gardens where young children work together with elderly people, gardens where people with diverse ethnic backgrounds unite, gardens where vulnerable people with severe mental and addiction challenges can find peace and learn to participate in society again, gardens in privileged neighbourhoods as well as in poorer districts, food gardens, educational gardens as well as more creative art gardens.

Summary

Oosterwold is an area of 4,300 hectares to the east of Almere, with space for 15,000 new habitations while still maintaining its green and agriculutural character. The municipalities of Zeewolde and Almere, who together govern the area, have decided to leave the development of this area entirely to private citizen’s initiative.
