Summary

Zero Waste Scotland (ZWS) was a programme set up in 2010 to support the implementation of the Scottish Government’s Zero Waste Plan. In 2014, ZWS became an independent not-for-profit company, funded by the Scottish Government to deliver circular economy and low carbon policy priorities. Scotland has realised the benefits of being a frontrunner in waste reduction and the government has consistently supported local authorities to drive up recycling rates. This ambition for a Zero Waste society evolved into strong support for a Circular Economy.

Irisphere project (Industrial Symbiosis) in Brussels

Summary

As part of an Interreg IVB project (C2C BIZZ), Citydev.brussels and its technical sub-contractor EcoRes addressed material and energy flows on a business site, at company level. New ‘material’ matches were made between companies on site. The experiences were used to develop the Continuous Loop Tool, a database for companies where they can add their waste materials and the resources they need in order to find matches. The Irisphere program will continue after the end of C2C BIZZ on a larger scale thanks to the ERDF.

Supply of sustainable concrete at the London Olympics

Summary

The London bid to host the 2012 Games set out a plan for how the Games could play a major role in the revitalisation of east London. Equally important was to achieve this in a sustainable manner, provide value for money, and to leave a lasting legacy for east London. The Olympic Delivery Authority’s (ODA) central job was to deliver venues, facilities and infrastructure and transport in a way that ‘maximised the delivery of sustainable objectives, on time and within the available budget’. This included the supply of the innitially estimated 500,000 m3 of ready-mix concrete required to build both the sporting venues and supporting infrastructure.

Greening of buildings in the Basque Country

Summary

SPRILUR S.A. is a public authority, which is integrated in the Department of Economic Development and Competitiveness of the Basque Government. SPRILURs intervention in the business market is aimed at guaranteeing the provision of public land and sufficient good quality industrial buildings to meet demand, while promoting industrial and business activity as a source of employment and wealth in the Basque Country.

Since 2009, within all tenders for the construction, restoration and design of industrial buildings (from the design stage to the execution of works), SPRILUR include as part of the award criteria, the degree of sustainability of the proposed project, which is based on the application of guides for the sustainable development of industrial buildings and urban development projects.
