Summary

As part of an Interreg IVB project (C2C BIZZ), Citydev.brussels and its technical sub-contractor EcoRes addressed material and energy flows on a business site, at company level. New ‘material’ matches were made between companies on site. The experiences were used to develop the Continuous Loop Tool, a database for companies where they can add their waste materials and the resources they need in order to find matches. The Irisphere program will continue after the end of C2C BIZZ on a larger scale thanks to the ERDF.

Summary

“Good Food Canteens” is a project that supports a shift towards sustainable food in the Brussels-Capital Region in institutional kitchens, including kitchens in nurseries, schools, companies, care homes and other administrations whether they are under their own management or that of an outside catering company.

Supply of sustainable concrete at the London Olympics

Summary

The London bid to host the 2012 Games set out a plan for how the Games could play a major role in the revitalisation of east London. Equally important was to achieve this in a sustainable manner, provide value for money, and to leave a lasting legacy for east London. The Olympic Delivery Authority’s (ODA) central job was to deliver venues, facilities and infrastructure and transport in a way that ‘maximised the delivery of sustainable objectives, on time and within the available budget’. This included the supply of the innitially estimated 500,000 m3 of ready-mix concrete required to build both the sporting venues and supporting infrastructure.

Using LCA and CO2 performance for procurement in the Netherlands

Summary

In 2010, the Dutch House of Commons decided that all public authorities in the Netherlands must implement 100% sustainable procurement as of 2015, which constitutes the inclusion of green criteria in all tenders. Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) is the Department of Public Works within the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment. RWS aims to use green public procurement to challenge and encourage contractors and suppliers to provide added value through the delivery of sustainable working practices, green materials, energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions.

In order to achieve these objectives, RWS uses functional specifications for infrastructure projects, together with tools to gauge bidders’ commitments to reducing carbon emissions within projects and to assess the life cycle environmental impacts of the materials they propose to use. These commitments and impacts are monetised within the award phase of the tender and quoted prices are adjusted accordingly.
