Summary

In 2011 Cornwall had around 6,000 bus stops with a wide range of associated shelters and signs. A programme of improvements to the quality and sustainability of this transport infrastructure, based on need and capacity, was created. The sustainable procurement of bus shelters was conducted in three stages: design; prototype development; and large scale production. This example focuses on the design stage.

Summary

The University of Malta has numerous on campus facilities catering for 11,000 students. The University’s Estate and Works Department is responsible for carrying out the internal finishing works for the new extension to the building which houses the lecture halls of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy (FEMA). The Department, in collaboration with the University’s Procurement Directorate, sought to deliver the works using environmentally-friendly construction materials and products.

Building maintenance services in San Sebastian

The Gipuzkoa Council wished to award a maintenance contract for two buildings in Donostia-San Sebastian, one residential and one administrative. The object of the contract was defined to include the environmental sustainability of the services being provided (exterior and internal maintenance of all building systems and facilities).

Summary

OVAM created an ecodesign service within its facitlity. It developed 3 main tools: Ecolizer (estimation of the environmental impact of a product design), OVAM SIS Toolkit (Sustainable Innovation System – integration of sustainability principles into innovation and design processes), EHE-kit (Implementation of eco-design in higher education). In addition OVAM developed 3 specific activities to boost ecodesign in Flanders: Awards for designers, research and collection of good examples, launch of the European Network of Ecodesign Centres (ENEC).
