Irisphere project (Industrial Symbiosis) in Brussels

Summary

As part of an Interreg IVB project (C2C BIZZ), Citydev.brussels and its technical sub-contractor EcoRes addressed material and energy flows on a business site, at company level. New ‘material’ matches were made between companies on site. The experiences were used to develop the Continuous Loop Tool, a database for companies where they can add their waste materials and the resources they need in order to find matches. The Irisphere program will continue after the end of C2C BIZZ on a larger scale thanks to the ERDF.

Supply of sustainable concrete at the London Olympics

Summary

The London bid to host the 2012 Games set out a plan for how the Games could play a major role in the revitalisation of east London. Equally important was to achieve this in a sustainable manner, provide value for money, and to leave a lasting legacy for east London. The Olympic Delivery Authority’s (ODA) central job was to deliver venues, facilities and infrastructure and transport in a way that ‘maximised the delivery of sustainable objectives, on time and within the available budget’. This included the supply of the innitially estimated 500,000 m3 of ready-mix concrete required to build both the sporting venues and supporting infrastructure.

Summary

The Marshall Plan 4.0 (2015-2019) which follows the Marshall Plan 2.Green (2009-2014) is the economic redeployment program for Wallonia. It intend to refocus the priorities of this economic restructuring program around the digital economy and circular economy. The Marshall Plan 4.0 develops a transverse axis dedicated to the circular economy as part of the Competitiveness Cluster Policy, with a specific focus on SMEs, and in collaboration with relevant actors. This focuses on the joint use of material flows and energy.

Summary

On a practical level, Rotor, a collective of architects and engineers, handles the conception and realization of design and architectural projects. On a theoretical level, Rotor develops strategic advices on design, material resources, and waste through research, and reports, organising exhibitions and conferences. Since 2014, the spin-off Rotor Deconstruction has been launched, a company that organizes the dismantling and selling of reusable construction components coming from the insides of large-scale, modern buildings.
