Summary

In 1992 SWAP (now Resource Futures) conducted research into household hazardous waste through the Waste Wagon project. As a result of this research the first local Community RePaint scheme was established and subsequently a national network of local schemes emerged.

Since 1998, Vienna supports financially the repair center R.U.S.Z. – Reparatur und Service Zentrum. At the R.U.S.Z. WEEE products diverted from shredder treatment are collected and repaired. Electronic waste that can be repaired is reused and sold as second hand equipment.

Summary

This initiative presents the different steps that were taken by the SYCTOM to increase the recovery rate of bulky waste over the past 10 years. It will especially focus on the modifications brought to the sorting processes, with the use of pre-sorting centres to remove part of the contamination.
