Summary

The objective of the Regional Programme for a Circular Economy (Programme Régional d’Economie circulaire – PREC) is to encourage the transformation of the linear economy into a circular economy, developing a strategic and operational vision of the environment as a resource creating local employment. This can be achieved in particular by relocating economic activity through short circuits in order to obtain a chain of value as complete as possible for the Brussels Capital-Region.

Industrial symbiosis in Kalundborg

  • Novo Nordisk (producer of insulin), Novozymes (producer of enzymes), French-owned Gyproc produces gypsum board, Dong Energy own the Asnæs Plant, the biggest power plant in Denmark, Statoil owns Denmark’s biggest oil refinery, Kara/Novoren is a waste treatment company.
  • Kalundborg utility company, Kalundborg Forsyning A/S supplies companies and the citizens of Kalundborg city with water and district heating, as well as disposing of waste water from the entire municipality. Kalundborg Forsyning A/S also supplies some companies with surface water taken from the lake Tissø, which is connected to Kalundborg through a 12 km long pipeline.

The Kalundborg Symbiosis is an industrial ecosystem in Denmark, where eight industrial companies are working together making by-products commercially interesting as new resources in other production processes after the cradle to cradle model. An industrial symbiosis is a local collaboration where public and private enterprises buy and sell residual products, resulting in mutual economic and environmental benefits.
